Phased 3G switch-off

What is the current timetable for mobile providers switching off their 3G networks?

Each provider has its own timetable for its 3G network switch-off.  In 2021 the government agreed with mobile network operators Vodafone, EE, O2 and Three that 3G and 2G mobile services will be phased out by 2033. At the time of writing, we have the following information available about each operator’s timetable for 3G switch off:

  • Vodafone began their switch off in Basingstoke and Plymouth in February and will proceed with a national rollout from June to end 2023. A regional phased plan is due to be published soon.
  • EE plans to start its switch-off in early 2024
  • Three expects to switch-off by the end of 2024
  • O2 has not yet announced their switch-off plans

Virtual networks, such as Giffgaff, Tesco Mobile and Smarty, piggyback off one of the big four networks. As such, their 3G services will end in line with the parent network. See the Which? table on the virtual providers.

How did the February 3G switch-off go in Plymouth?
There was no service interruption at Plymouth as a result of forward planning.  The council planned for the legacy terminals to have Vodaphone SIMs swapped to another mobile provider. Where the alternative provider’s network was not available a roaming SIM was used.

What should I do to prepare?
Firstly talk with your relevant suppliers or service providers to ascertain how many of your terminals will be affected.  Depending upon your service agreement, upgrades may be included in a maintenance plan.

For devices using a Vodaphone specific SIM, you could consider changing the card operator to one planning to switch 3G off later than Vodaphone or use a roaming SIM.  Where this is not an option, you may need to upgrade affected terminals or you may consider removing some terminals.

As more information is known regarding operator’s switch off timetables we will update members.
