Cambridge University earns new Park Mark award for Park and Cycle site
The site’s new award highlights a dedication to safety from the university team as well as renewed commitment to active travel
Cambridge University’s Park and Cycle site has won the Park Mark award, highlighting a great commitment to safety in parking; the accreditation is part of the Safer Parking Scheme (SPS), a Police Crime Prevention Initiative that has been successfully reducing crime in car parks for two decades.
Managed by the BPA on behalf of Police Crime Prevention Initiatives, the SPS requires each car park to undergo a rigorous assessment by specially trained police assessors. Assessments include management and maintenance of the facility, taking into consideration surveillance, lighting, signage and cleanliness. Car parks accredited under the scheme are awarded the Park Mark® certification, indicating they meet the highest standards of safety and security.
The Park and Cycle site allows for staff to park their cars on the outskirts of the city, and cycle into work, having stored their bikes in secure cycle storage units. The scheme helps reduce carbon emissions in Cambridge and encourages physical activity and a healthier team.
Colin Sproats, BPA Eastern Area Manager said: “The car park managed by Cambridge University has once again achieved the prestigious Park Mark award for Cambridge Park & Cycle Facility. This is a fantastic achievement recognising that its parking facilities have measures in place that actively deter crime and the fear of crime in car parks and helping reduce carbon emissions in Cambridge and encourage physical activity and a healthier team.”
Steve Matthews, Operations Manager, said: “By being a member of Park Mark it provides us with a benchmark on how we should, and do, manage our car parks and maintain security of the site and its users. By obtaining the award it assures the users of the site's safety.”
