BPA Welcomes Support in Parliament for a Vehicle Compliance Management Act
The British Parking Association (BPA) was reassured to see Josh Babarinde MP for Eastbourne address the House of Commons in support of the newly proposed Vehicle Compliance Management Act (VCMA). The Act, which seeks to modernise and streamline vehicle compliance regulations, represents a significant step forward for the parking and vehicle management industry in the UK.
The statement and question in Parliament by Josh Babarinde MP to the Secretary of State for Transport Louise Haigh marked a pivotal moment in the legislative process, underscoring the widespread recognition of the importance of the Vehicle Compliance Management Act. The MP’s support signals growing momentum for the Act, which is expected to bring increased clarity and consistency to vehicle compliance across the UK.
Alison Tooze, BPA Chief Engagement and Policy Officer, commented: “We are delighted to see the Vehicle Compliance Management Act being discussed in Parliament, and we are particularly grateful for the MP’s backing. The BPA has long championed the need for fair and transparent compliance measures in the parking industry, and today’s developments take us one step closer to achieving that goal. This legislation is vital in supporting both motorists and parking management professionals, ensuring that compliance is managed efficiently and equitably.”
We are deeply concerned about the number of non-compliant cars on the road today. Without a robust approach to tackling this problem, we can only see the number of cars driving around with cloned plates or no valid insurance increasing. This poses a danger to everyday motorists who could face financial ruin if targeted or involved in an accident with one of these cars. We cannot to continue to ignore this problem. Action is needed and action is needed now."
Alan Wood, CEO of the National Persistent Evader Database (NPED), stated: "For over a decade, we’ve witnessed a steady decline in road use compliance. This is a serious, yet often overlooked issue that affects us all, and addressing it requires real collaboration among government, police, local authorities and the parking sector. We must work together to bring these non-compliant vehicles into the open and establish fair, balanced legislative solutions.
This is our nations hidden menace, it’s time to restore order on our roads and regain control of our vehicle community— it’s overdue."
The BPA looks forward to further parliamentary discussions on the Vehicle Compliance Management Act and we call on the Government to act quickly to meet with industry, stakeholders and the police to take the act forward.
