How AI use in transportation impacts drivers

The automative sector has seen plenty of innovation in recent years using artificial intelligence (AI)

The latest cars on the market are packed full of useful tools and gadgets as standard. This technology has become so commonplace that we often take it for granted when getting behind the wheel. 

One of the areas in which we’ve seen the most innovation in recent years is artificial intelligence (AI). Just like many other industries, the automotive sector has embraced the rise of AI over the last decade or so, and leveraged its many capabilities to enhance the driving experience. Perhaps without even realising it, AI is likely already impacting you every time you get into your car. In this guide, we delve into some of the most prevalent ways in which it’s doing that.

We all know that safety is of utmost importance every time we get behind the wheel, and AI is set to play a key role in optimising the safety of all road users. According to recent statistics, around 88% of collisions on the road are caused by human error; while we’re still some way off autonomous driving being the norm, augmenting the driving experience with the help of AI could help to drastically reduce instances of human error. But how? 

One of the primary roles of AI in driver safety is to provide real time alerts to make motorists aware of any potential hazards during their journey. Whether it’s a sudden change in the weather or perhaps dangerous road conditions ahead, these alerts can prompt drivers to consider the risks and change their behaviour accordingly. Similarly, AI-powered lane departure warning systems help to keep vehicles from inadvertently drifting between lanes, while fatigue alerts can remind drivers when it’s time to take a break.

Reducing carbon emissions

AI is having a transformative impact on the sustainability sector, which naturally is an issue high on the agenda of many modern motorists. Undoubtedly, the widespread switch to electric vehicles (EVs) will have the biggest impact on reducing emissions in the automotive sector. But, while petrol and diesel-powered cars are still on the roads, it’s important we find ways to lessen the environmental footprint created by our vehicles. 

For instance, built-in, AI-powered navigation systems can highlight the most efficient routes to drivers to reduce your journey’s emissions. At the same time, AI has the ability to monitor driving habits – like engine idling or aggressive acceleration – and make fuel-saving recommendations. Research shows that, by encouraging better driving practices, telematics (powered by AI) could reduce fuel costs by 20-25%

Improving entertainment and comfort

With so much technology packed into modern cars, driving these days is seemingly as much about enjoying the experience of being on the road as it is about getting to your destination. One key feature that’s become standard in new cars is voice recognition. AI-powered systems use voice recognition to act as virtual assistants and allow drivers to control the internal systems without needing to take their hands off the wheel. 

Whether it’s adjusting the radio station, asking for directions, or even changing the temperature setting in the car, these innovative systems are revolutionising driver comfort and convenience. In addition, AI has the ability to learn from patterns to make suggestions and automatic changes based on your preferences.
